, little charlotte. he moved to new york city in 1948, where benny goodman hire him and he became very famous in new york at the time and he died in new york in 2001. one of the pieces of my ticket to ride is how many cubans of irish ancestry are there. because this connected to my family, that's why i wanted to read it to you. in the 40's, my father moved to new york in search of his destiny. he learned to make brillantine in red, blue and golden colors to give a beautiful sheen to the hair. in his spare time, when he could break free from his alchemist's captive vit, he would go listen to cuban music at the park plaza hotel in manhattan. those were happy times and years later became a happy tomic with me, convinced early on that my father inhabited a magic world. a few years ago, while listening to a recording of cuban blues by chico, i remembered in new york in those stories of the 40's that chico and my father met at club cuba in manhattan and again in havana in the mid-50's. the sessions of chico's house in our neighborhood became so famous that even my father, not particularly fo

to new york state's comptroller. and it's about to get a whole lot worse. citigroup is laying off 11,000 people worldwide. bank of america and hsbc combined plan for 40,000 layoffs this year. ubs said in october it would cut 10,000 workers. all told, more than 300,000 financial industry jobs have been lost worldwide during the past two years. the bank belt-tightening is expected to continue in 2013. macs are making their way back to the u.s. apple ceo tim cook told bloomberg this week the company will begin manufacturing a line of mac computers in the u.s. most of apple's products are made in asia. factories such as foxconn, a major apple supplier, have come under heavy scrutiny for low wages and poor working conditions. cook said the company will spend $100 million on the manufacturing move in the states, but no word yet on where it will take place. in other apple news, the iphone is getting picked up by another carrier. t-mobile will begin selling the iphone next year. talks are back in the fiscal fight. according to the wall street journal, the staffs for president obama and house

davidson is the cofounder of planet money and he did the math. he wrote in "the new york times" a while ago, a set of numbers that has stuck with me ever since that increasing the middle class tax burden 8% would have a bigger impact than taxing millionaires at 100%. of course, once you tax millionaires at 100%, there's nothing else left to get them the next year. even bill clinton agrees. here's what he said at a conference i saw him at back in may. >> i think you could tax me at 100% and you wouldn't balance the budget. we're all going to have to contribute to this and if middle class people's wages were going up again and we had some growth in the economy, i don't think they would object to going back to the tax rates. >> with no breakthrough today, fiscal cliff negotiations, could this be a starting point? know how important that is. jon: right now, in a new york city courtroom ophadel williams, the gentleman on the screen is learning what the jury thinks about his responsibility or culpability in one of the most horrific traffic cases this city has seen in recent times. it was march 12, 2011, when the bus williams was driving tipped over an on expressway in new york state in the bronx specifically. it hit the signpost you see there, cut the top of the bus and killed 15 people. all of them were returning from a casino trip to connecticut. he says that he was cut off by a tractor-trailer rig. prosecutors charged him with being so recklessly sleep deprived that it was as if he was drunk. he faces 15 counts of manslaughter among other charges. the jury's have is being read right now but in the situation it is always confusing whether or not these are guilty or not guilty verdicts. we're going to keep an eye on it. when we find out precisely what happens we will bring you the verdicts but he faces 15 years in prison 1/4 million dollars fine if he is convicted on all 15 manslaugh
